Hospira, an IV equipment manufacturing company in Deerfield, Illinois, provided funding for conversion of the highly popular Explorer Series® programs from CD-ROM to web. Explorer Series programs help kids and teens learn more about their diseases including Sickle Cell, Cystic Fibrosis and Kidney Disease; and helps them prepare for and cope with common tests such as IVs, X-Rays, CT Scans, MRIs, Spinal Taps and Bone Marrow Aspirations.
Based on the successful dissemination of the Explorer Series on CD-ROM, Starlight Starbright is partnering with Hospira to make the programs more flexible and broadly accessible by putting them online. Hospira is also providing support for program marketing and dissemination, as well as dedicated chat rooms for teens with Sickle Cell, Cystic Fibrosis and Kidney Disease. In addition, Hospira is sponsoring 5 PC Pals to be distributed to horpitals in 2006.
Research has found that children who participated in the Explorer Series programs improved their disease management and coping skills, and felt less isolated and alone.
